Among other things, The Swedish translator Runnquist says in his afterword: "I'm quite aware that it is hardly less presumptuous to translate "Alice" than to attack "Hamlet"... It is a highly intricate work, full of allusions and hidden quotations and to a high degree stamped by the author's time and environment."
